AstraZeneca Research Bursaries (and Sandwich Placements) in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Students strongly motivated towards a career in organic chemistry research are fundamental to pharmaceutical R&D. AstraZeneca has been a long-time advocate of industrial placements and work experience that provides industry relevant training, and is keen to help promising organic chemistry undergraduates mature into future researchers.
Research Bursaries in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
AstraZeneca is supporting an annual Research Bursary scheme for up to 20 promising undergraduates each year from UK universities, with an interest in practical organic chemistry research relevant to the pharmaceutical industry.
The Research Bursary scheme will provide bursaries of £2k per year over the period of undergraduate study, and a requirement during 3rd or 4th year of study to undertake either a sandwich placement at AstraZeneca or a vacation research placement in a university or an AstraZeneca research group.
Candidates will be identified for interview at AstraZeneca during 2nd - 5th November inclusive, under the combined AstraZeneca Research Bursaries and Sandwich Placements in Synthetic Organic Chemistry recruitment process.
Sandwich Placements in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
An annual sandwich student recruitment campaign will continue to exist alongside the new Research Bursary Scheme. AstraZeneca will offer up to 25 sandwich student placements for students in their 3rd or 4th year of study.
Candidates will be identified for interview at AstraZeneca during 2nd - 5th November, under the combined AstraZeneca Research Bursaries and Sandwich Placements in Synthetic Organic Chemistry recruitment process.
Applications / Eligibility
Research Bursary offers will be conditional on candidates undertaking a research placement which can be either a sandwich placement at AstraZeneca, or a vacation research placement at AstraZeneca or within a university research laboratory.
An online application process for both schemes will run from 1st September 2009 with a closing date of 18 October 2009 www.ideas.astrazeneca.com/sandwich-and-summer-placements
Undergraduate applicants should be studying for MChem / MSci or equivalent, have completed a first year and starting a second year of study, and be performing at a high level (equivalent to achieving a 1st or 2.1 class degree).
Students at UK Universities who are eligible to apply for a Research Bursary in September/October 2009
- Students commencing a 2nd year of study in September 2009 looking for a Sandwich placement in 2010-11 (or 2011-12 for students at Universities adopting final year sandwich placements)
- Students commencing a 2nd year of study in September 2009 looking for a vacation research placement in 2011
- Students at Scottish Universities commencing a 3rd year of study in September 2009 looking for a Sandwich placement in 2010-2011 or vacation research placement in 2011
Students outside the Research Bursary elegibility criteria, but seeking a sandwich year chemistry placement with AstraZeneca (e.g. students commencing a 3rd year of study in September 2009 seeking sandwich placement for 2010-2011; students seeking non-synthetic organic chemistry placements etc) should apply for placements via www.ideas.astrazeneca.com/sandwich-and-summer-placements
